Most Venerable Matara Sri Ñānārāma Mahā Thero was a revered figure in modern Sri Lankan Buddhism and the founding Abbot of Mitirigala Nissarana Vanaya, where he served as Chief Preceptor from 1967 until his passing in 1992. His presence was deeply felt throughout the monastery, where his dedication to meditative practice and Dhamma instruction left an enduring legacy.

Most Venerable Matara Sri Ñānārāma Mahā Thero

In recognition of his profound understanding of the Dhamma, Venerable Ñānārāma was honoured with numerous spiritual titles, a testament to his immeasurable service to the Buddha Sāsana.

In 1951, he was appointed the first head of the newly established Sri Kalyāni Yogashrama Samsthā, becoming the Chief Preceptor of a vast network of Ramañña Nikāya forest monasteries across Sri Lanka.

His training in meditation was significantly enriched in 1958 when a delegation of esteemed Burmese meditation masters visited Sri Lanka. Under the guidance of Sayadaw U Javana, a senior disciple of the late Mahāsi Sayadaw, Venerable Ñānārāma underwent intensive instruction in the Vipassanā tradition, further deepening his meditative insights and fostering strong ties with the Burmese Sangha.

Fluent in Sinhala, Pāli, and Sanskrit, he conveyed the Buddha’s teachings with clarity and timeless relevance, shaped by his own deep meditative experience. He authored numerous works in Sinhala, including:

  • Bhāvanā Mārgaya (The Path of Meditation)
  • Vidarshanā Parapura (On the Lineage of Insight Meditation)
  • Samatha/Vidarshanā Bhāvanā Mārgaya (Meditation on Calm and Insight)
  • Sat Anupassanā (The Seven Contemplations of Insight)

Several of these teachings were later translated into English and published by the Buddhist Publication Society, including:

  • Seven Stages of Purification and Insight Knowledges
  • Seven Contemplations of Insight

These texts provide a profound and systematic presentation of the progressive stages of insight meditation, from the cultivation of ethical restraint to the realization of liberation (Nibbāna). Seven Contemplations of Insight originated from a series of discourses he delivered at Nissarana Vanaya, offering detailed instruction on the initial insights in the Vipassanā path.

Despite his scholarly achievements, Venerable Ñānārāma always prioritized meditative practice. He emphasized continuous mindfulness and encouraged all practitioners—monastics and lay followers alike—to pursue the path with urgency and unwavering diligence. He often reflected on the rarity of fortunate conditions such as human birth, access to the Buddha’s teachings, and association with wise companions, urging his students not to squander these blessings.

Known for his humility, compassion, and resilience, Venerable Ñānārāma endured physical hardships with unwavering calm. His life at the hermitage was marked by quiet acts of generosity, often sharing what he received with the resident Sangha.

A rare and inspiring teacher, Venerable Ñānārāma Mahā Thero’s unwavering commitment to the path of liberation continues to guide and inspire generations of Dhamma practitioners.
